High-Efficiency Cooling for a Data Centre in Frankfurt

Carrier supported a new data centre development in Frankfurt, Germany, delivering a high-performance cooling solution designed for maximum efficiency, reliability and flexibility. The project used AquaForce® 30XF air-cooled screw chillers with integrated 100% free cooling, purpose-built for data centre applications.

The Challenge

The customer required a cooling system that could meet:

  • High efficiency and availability targets

  • Strict sound level limits

  • Space constraints within the site

  • Continuous, resilient operation in high ambient temperatures

The Solution

Carrier supplied 38 AquaForce® 30XF air-cooled chillers, each delivering up to 1,795 kW
The units operate on 16.6°C / 24.4°C chilled water at outdoor temperatures up to 39°C.

Key design features include:

  • Variable-speed technology for optimal part-load and full-load efficiency

  • Three operating modes: compressor, free cooling, or hybrid operation

  • Compact V-condenser design enabling high capacity in limited space

Key Benefits

These features combine to deliver a highly efficient, resilient and low-risk cooling solution designed specifically for mission-critical data centre environments.

  • Integrated 100% free cooling for significant energy savings

  • High power quality with a power factor of 0.98

  • Pure water operation on the customer side (no glycol)

  • Fast power recovery in 190 seconds for service continuity

  • Low noise operation through frequency control

  • Built-in harmonic filters limiting electrical harmonics to <5%, reducing risk and extending equipment life

The Result

The Frankfurt data centre benefits from a highly efficient, compact and reliable cooling system, supporting continuous operation while reducing energy use and carbon footprint.

This project demonstrates Carrier’s ability to deliver innovative, data-centre-ready HVAC solutions tailored to demanding technical and environmental requirements.
